Assignment 7: Size Matters

1600 Strobe with Reflector 5’ from subject
ISO 100, 1/60 @ f20
This picture with the strobe and only the reflector has a more defined shadow than the picture below with the white umbrella.  The overall lighting shows more contrast with just the reflector.

1600 Strobe with Reflector and White Umbrella 5'from subject
ISO 100, 1/60 @ f14
This picture taken using the reflector and white umbrella on the strobe gives a much softer, less defined shadow. The overall lighting is more diffused.

1600 Strobe with Reflector and Large Umbrella 8' from subject
ISO 100, 1/60 @ f8

1600 Strobe with Reflector and Small Umbrella 5' from subject
ISO 100, 1/60 @ f11
The first photo taken was the photo with the small umbrella 5' from the subject. From there the lighting with the large umbrella had to match the light given with the small umbrella. At first, we tried to move the large umbrella closer to the subject in order to have the light more concentrated and harsher, as if the it was the small umbrella. The resulting images had lighting that was too diffused. Under Christine's suggestion we moved the large umbrella further back, to 8' from the subject in order to make the area of light that is cast smaller on the subject. The light meter was used to meter for the correct aperture, and we bracketed from there to find the lighting that matched the best.

Assignment 6: Depth of Field (Makeup Still Life)

Shallow Depth of Field
ISO 100, 1/60 @  f/4
To emphasize the shallow depth of field I moved the brush holder farther back from the bottles and I placed the camera very close to the set up.

Greater Depth of Field
 ISO 100, 1/60 @ f/16
To emphasize the greater depth of field I moved the brush holder closer to the bottles, and I stood further away from the set up. A reflector was used on the left side of the set up to help see more details on the brushes.

Assignment 4: Capturing the Sides of Hana

Soft and gentle, much like the flattering diffused light that cascades upon her. The light was placed directly in front of the model in order to get an even cast of light. A Rosco Tough Spun diffusion filter was used. The Inverse Square Law can be applied to this photo when seeing how brightly lit the subject is as she was positioned close to the light source.
Dark. Edgy. Mysterious. This girl has two sides, but neither of them are good. She likes the side directed light to hide half her face, and she doesn't care about all of the imperfections captured under hard the light. The law of light that states that light travels in a straight line is demonstrated in this photo because the light source is on the side of the model's face and that side is the only illuminated side.

  • Angle of Incidence = the Angle of Reflection
  • Inverse Square Law

Assignment 2: Inverse Square Law

Card distances from light: 2'/4'6"/12'

Setup
My understanding of the Inverse Square Law is that the intensity of light cast upon a subject falls as the distance between the source of light and the subject increases. With this in mind, our group set up the three cards from darkest to lightest. The black card would have the highest light intensity, so it would appear lighter in the photo. The white card in the back would have the least light cast upon it, so it would appear darker in the photo.
